Speaker A:Welcome to a new series that we are kicking off.
Speaker A:It is titled History of Christianity and the Bible and in this series we will dive deep into the origins, formation and development of Christianity and the sacred text we call the Bible.
Speaker A:Throughout this journey, we'll explore the pivotal events, figures and counsels that shaped our faith, highlighting how Christianity spread from me small movement to a global religion.
Speaker A:Each message will cover significant historical moments, key personalities and core teachings, helping us to appreciate the endurance and evolution of our beliefs.
Speaker A:Let's begin with the first message, brothers and sisters.
Speaker A:The Birth of Christianity the early church in the first century A.D.
Speaker A:under Roman rule, the people of Israel longed for deliverance, anticipating the arrival of a Messiah.
Speaker A:Into this setting came Jesus Christ, whose life and teachings transformed lives and brought hope to a weary people.
Speaker A:Following his resurrection, Jesus left his followers with a mission that would birth the church and change the world.
Speaker A:Let's go through some key dates and events in early Christianity's beginnings.
Speaker A:First we have Jesus Ministry which ran from circa 27 to 30 A.D.
Speaker A:and Jesus Public Ministry began around 27 A.D.
Speaker A:for three years he traveled through towns and cities, preaching about God's kingdom, healing the sick, casting out demons and calling disciples to follow him.
Speaker A:Jesus message was simple but radical, challenging people to love their enemies, forgive others and live in service to God.
Speaker A:Key teachings such as the Sermon on the Mount as we read from Matthew 5, 7 set the foundation for Christian ethics and values, emphasizing mercy, purity and humility.
Speaker A:Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God.
Speaker A:Next we have the Great Commission, which ran around circa 30 A.D.
Speaker A:after his crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days with his disciples preparing them for the mission ahead.
Speaker A:He then commissioned them to spread the gospel to all nations, known as the Great Commission.
Speaker A:Jesus final words charged his disciples to teach, baptize and make disciples of all nations, setting in motion the mission of the Church.
Speaker A:A key date of the ascension of Jesus was approximately 30 AD believed to have occurred 40 days after he resurrection.
Speaker A: Matthew: Speaker A:Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.
Speaker A:Next we have the Day of Pentecost circa 30 AD 10 days after Jesus ascension.
Speaker A:On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit describes descended upon the gathered believers in Jerusalem.
Speaker A:The Spirit's arrival was marked by tongues of fire and the apostles speaking in tongues they had never learned, allowing them to communicate the gospel to people from Many nations.
Speaker A:This day, approximately 30 AD is considered the birthday of the church.
Speaker A:Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the apostles boldly preached the Gospel and around 3,000 people were baptized that day.
Speaker A:As we read in Acts 2, verse 41, a key dates being the day of Pentecost circa 30 AD is normally observed 50 days after Passover.
Speaker A:Acts 2, verse 1 to 4 says when the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one one place.
Speaker A:All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Speaker A:Next we have the growth of the early Christian communities as we that was around 30 to 50 A.D.
Speaker A:following Pentecost, the apostles established early Christian communities throughout Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria.
Speaker A:They gathered for worship, shared meals and cared for each other's needs.
Speaker A:There the church was marked by shared commitment and unity described in Acts 2:42 47 where believers devoted themselves to the Apostles teaching fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer.
Speaker A:Some key figures were Peter, a leader in Jerusalem and Paul, a former persecutor of Christians who became the primary missionary to the Gentiles.
Speaker A:Acts 2:42 says they devoted themselves to the Apostles teachings and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Speaker A:Then we have Peter and Paul who are the foundational figures of the early church.
Speaker A:We read about them around circa 30 to 67 A.D.
Speaker A:now Peter known as the rock upon which Jesus would build his church.
Speaker A:Peter played a crucial role in the leading the early church, especially in Jerusalem.
Speaker A:His sermon at Pentecost brought thousands to the faith.
Speaker A: : Speaker A:originally Paul was about Paul, originally known as Saul.
Speaker A:Paul converted to Christianity around 35 A.D.
Speaker A:after a dramatic encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus.
Speaker A:As we read in Acts 9, he became the primary missionary to the Gentiles, traveling across the Roman Empire and establishing churches.
Speaker A:His letters to these communities became a foundational part of the New Testament.
Speaker A:And Paul was martyred around 64 to 67 AD likely under Emperor Nero's persecution.
Speaker A:A key scripture reference for us is Acts 9:15 this man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.
Speaker A:Some applicable lessons we have is Number one, the importance of obedience and faith in action.
Speaker A:Jesus disciples embraced the Great Commission despite the risks demonstrating obedience that fuel the spread of Christianity.
Speaker A:Personal application Are we ready to obey Christ's call even when it's difficult?
Speaker A:The early Christians acted in faith not waiting for ideal conditions.
Speaker A:Another lesson is the power of community.
Speaker A:Early Christian communities served when another shared resources and pray together.
Speaker A:Their unity strengthened their witness.
Speaker A:Personal application question is, how strong is our Christian community today?
Speaker A:Are we supporting one another, praying together and growing in faith as the early believers did?
Speaker A:Another applicable lesson is for us to be empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Speaker A:The Holy Spirit was the church's lifeblood, guiding and empowering the apostles to overcome challenges and spread the gospel.
Speaker A:A personal application question is do we rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance or are we attempting to carry out God's work on our own?
Speaker A:The early church thrived by following the Spirit's lead.
Speaker A:There are some questions for reflection.
Speaker A:How does the Great Commission mission impact your life today?
Speaker A:Are you actively participating in the mission to share God's love with others?
Speaker A:Question 2 In what ways does your local church embody the sense of community seen in the early church?
Speaker A:Question 3 How often do you seek the Holy Spirit's guidance in your daily walk with Christ?
