Proverbs — Message 4 - Money, Debt, and Generosity: Prosperity With Clean Hands

The central thesis of this discourse is encapsulated in the assertion that "the borrower is slave to the lender," a profound admonition derived from Proverbs 22:7. In our examination of money, debt, and generosity, we delve into the intricate dynamics of financial stewardship as a reflection of one's spiritual maturity. It is imperative to recognize that the management of financial resources extends beyond mere acquisition; it is fundamentally a test of discipline, wisdom, and reverence for God. We must cultivate an understanding that true prosperity is contingent upon honoring God first with our wealth and engaging in generous stewardship, thereby demonstrating that money does not wield dominion over us. As we navigate the complexities of financial obligations, let us commit to fostering a lifestyle characterized by intentionality and restraint, ultimately seeking to achieve prosperity with clean hands.

Takeaways:

  • The concept of money serves as a profound test of one's discipline, wisdom, and reverence for God.
  • Debt is not merely an inconvenience; it is a form of bondage that one must urgently seek to escape.
  • Honoring God with the firstfruits of our wealth is essential to experiencing true biblical prosperity.
  • Practicing generosity is indicative of spiritual maturity and demonstrates that money does not possess us.

Speaker A:

Welcome back to the Message.

Speaker A:

And we continue with our series on the book of Proverbs.

Speaker A:

And today we're talking about money.

Speaker A:

Because money is not just currency.

Speaker A:

It's a test.

Speaker A:

A test of your discipline, a test of your wisdom, a test of your fear of God.

Speaker A:

And if you want biblical prosperity, you must learn this.

Speaker A:

God blesses clean hands, not careless habits.

Speaker A:

If money controls you, it can't be entrusted to you.

Speaker A:

In our fourth message of the series, money, debt and generosity.

Speaker A:

Prosperity with clean hands.

Speaker A:

The borrower is slave to the lender.

Speaker A:

Proverbs 22:7 tells us now, have you ever met someone who earns a lot of but lives like they're being hunted?

Speaker A:

Because the moment the phone rings, it could be debt collectors.

Speaker A:

The moment they open an email, it could be final notice.

Speaker A:

They have a car, but it's really their lender's car.

Speaker A:

So they look free, but they are financed.

Speaker A:

The borrower is slave to the lender.

Speaker A:

Proverbs 22, verse 7 says it plainly.

Speaker A:

Not the borrower is inconvenienced not the borrower is mildly stressed slave.

Speaker A:

And God did not save you to make you a spiritual person living in financial chains.

Speaker A:

Point one of the message, brothers and sisters, is debt is often a chain with a receipt.

Speaker A:

Let's balance this out.

Speaker A:

Not every debt is the same.

Speaker A:

But Proverbs warns against reckless debt.

Speaker A:

Debt you take for image, impulse and impatience.

Speaker A:

Proverbs 6:1 2 warns about putting yourself under obligations you can't manage.

Speaker A:

And Proverbs 6:5 says, Free yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter.

Speaker A:

That means God wants urgency in breaking financial bondage.

Speaker A:

Some of you don't have a money problem.

Speaker A:

You have a decisions problem.

Speaker A:

You buy to feel better, you spend to impress.

Speaker A:

You borrow to look successful, and then you pray for for peace.

Speaker A:

How can you ask God for freedom while signing contracts that create slavery?

Speaker A:

Debt promises comfort today and steals options tomorrow.2 of the message is that God honors honor God first, not last.

Speaker A:

Proverbs 3, 9, 10 says, Honor the Lord with your wealth with the first fruits of all your crops.

Speaker A:

Then your bonds will be filled.

Speaker A:

Notice this Honor God first, not left over.

Speaker A:

Not if there's something first fruits.

Speaker A:

Biblical prosperity is not just about what comes in, it's about how it's governed.

Speaker A:

And here's the truth.

Speaker A:

If you can't honor God when it's small, you won't honor God when it's big.

Speaker A:

Because increase doesn't create character.

Speaker A:

Increase reveals character.

Speaker A:

Luke:

Speaker A:

So God watches how you manage little because little is training for much.

Speaker A:

God doesn't fund chaos, he funds stewardship.

Speaker A:

Point three of the message Generosity is the proof money is not your God.

Speaker A:

Proverbs:

Speaker A:

The generous will prosper.

Speaker A:

Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Speaker A:

Generosity is not just kindness, it's spiritual maturity.

Speaker A:

Because when you can release money, it means money doesn't own you.

Speaker A:

When you can give, it means your trust is in God, not your banking app.

Speaker A:

Now hear me clearly.

Speaker A:

We are not preaching reckless giving without wisdom.

Speaker A:

We are preaching generous stewardship.

Speaker A:

A heart that is open, disciplined and led by God.

Speaker A:

Do you want God to multiply what you keep clenched in your fist?

Speaker A:

A closed hand can't receive and it can't bless.

Speaker A:

Here are some applicable lessons.

Speaker A:

1.

Speaker A:

Tell your money where to go or it will tell you where you can't go.

Speaker A:

Make a budget.

Speaker A:

Give every rand a job.

Speaker A:

2.

Speaker A:

Attack debt with a plan.

Speaker A:

Cut unnecessary spending.

Speaker A:

Increase income where possible.

Speaker A:

Pay smallest to largest or highest interest.

Speaker A:

Just move with urgency.

Speaker A:

3.

Speaker A:

Honor God first.

Speaker A:

Give with reverence, not pressure.

Speaker A:

4.

Speaker A:

Build margin, save, prepare.

Speaker A:

Don't live on edge every month.

Speaker A:

5.

Speaker A:

Practice generosity consistently not only when you feel led.

Speaker A:

Develop a generous lifestyle.

Speaker A:

Prosperity isn't what you earn, it's what you manage.

Speaker A:

Let us be warned lovingly stop praying for financial breakthrough while refusing financial discipline.

Speaker A:

God has not mocked what you sow you will reap.

Speaker A:

Galatians 6:7 tells us.

Speaker A:

But here's the encouragement.

Speaker A:

God can rebuild your financial life.

Speaker A:

He can give you wisdom.

Speaker A:

He can open doors, he can provide favor.

Speaker A:

But he will also call you to order.

Speaker A:

God's blessing rests where his wisdom is practiced.

Speaker A:

Here are some questions for reflection.

Speaker A:

Where am I spending to impress instead of spending to build?

Speaker A:

What debt is limiting my obedience and my options?

Speaker A:

If God increased my income by 50% would generosity increase or would lifestyle increase?

Speaker A:

Let us pray.

Speaker A:

Father, in the name of Jesus, give us wisdom with money.

Speaker A:

Forgive us for reckless spending, debt traps and financial pride.

Speaker A:

Deliver us from slavery to lenders, slavery to image and slavery to impulse.

Speaker A:

Teach us stewardship, discipline, planning and self control.

Speaker A:

Help us honor you first with our wealth and make us generous, cheerful, wise and consistent givers.

Speaker A:

We ask for biblical prosperity, clean increase, clean hands, clean conscience and generational legacy.

Speaker A:

In Jesus name, Amen.

Speaker A:

That's message four.

Speaker A:

Money, debt and generosity.

Speaker A:

Prosperity with clean hands.

Speaker A:

And in the next message we will tackle relationships and counsel.

Speaker A:

Who you walk with determines where you land.
